Intermediate Land Navigation ILN01  Saturday 8 am to 5 pm.

  • Navigation by terrain association.
  • Understanding major and minor terrain features and identification on a topographical map.
  • Using backstops, handrails, and attack points.
  • Take reference bearings against natural features such as rivers, trails, ridgelines, and draws.
  • Locating a point on a linear feature using aiming off. 
  • Locating your position on a map using triangulation and resection.
  • Adding timing cards to pace count to increase accuracy across distance.

This course builds off of the skills learned in Basic Land Navigation BLN01, at this point the student will understand taking and applying bearings, grid reference, plotting six-digit coordinates, and navigation by dead reckoning (point to point).  The purpose of this course is to advance the understanding of the natural environment by introducing, and identifying natural terrain features, and how to use these to assist in navigation. Emphasis will be placed on fieldwork and students should be prepared to be outside in inclement weather for long periods of time.
