Basic Land Navigation BLN01 2hrs Friday Night and All- day Saturday 8 am to 5 pm.

• Taking a bearing
• Applying a bearing given by instructor cadre
• Understanding maps, map scales, contour lines, and map legends
• Understanding UTM and plotting six-digit UTM coordinates on a map.
• Applying bearings to and from map and compass
• Dead reckoning
• Magnetic declination
• Understanding the three pillars of land navigation Time, Direction, Distance
• Pace Count

In this course, the student will learn all fundamental skills to the wilderness applications of map and compass. They will work with the instructor cadre to ascertain pace counts and build their own pace beads. Learn point-to-point navigation and measure speed, distance, and direction. The student will learn the UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) grid system and plot a six-digit coordinate to identify their location on a map and travel from one waypoint to another. The student will be required to demonstrate proficiency by working as a two-person team to complete a land navigation course with a prize for the first returning team with all waypoint identifiers.
